Everywhere you turn, the cultural effects surround us. Magazines on the newstands feature full-page color ads for online poker rooms. You can turn on the television and have as much chance of seeing people like Phil Hellmuth Jr. or Johnny Chan as you would some of your favorite entertainment personalities. No matter where you look, poker is sweeping the nation, and now you want to get in. But how do you know where to go and find good games? With the abundance of internet cardrooms, poker is merely a download away, but where can you feel comfortable playing? I will help you out and give you some of the top cardrooms to play which take into account good poker interface, quality competition, good advice, celebrity/pro influence, and good bonuses. Bodog This is my preferred poker room. Not only do they have a full-service casino which includes traditional casino games and slot machines, but they also have a sportsbook where you can lay down bets on your favorite sports or horses. But the draw for me is the poker room. Right off the bat, they offer decent sized bonuses. The offer you a modest 10% bonus for your initial deposit, but also back that up with 10% bonuses everytime you reload your account. It may not seem like a lot, but these bonuses add up in case you are looking to play long-term. The site is incredibly easy to navigate. The links are clear and help is very easy to find. You can move from the poker rooms to the sportsbook with relative ease, and their FAQ section will send you where you need to qo without having to do much searching at all. The website is very sleek and modern looking, with a feel of technological advancements which make you comfortable they will continue to improve and add new advancements. The actual poker software is updated once every few weeks and they always bring new improvements to the software that make it easier to play. This site is the brainchild of CEO and founder Calvin Ayre, one of the more visible faces in online poker today. He has attracted some of the young guns in the poker world to help him with the promotion of his site. names like David Williams (runner-up in 2004 WSOP $10K Main Event), Josh Arieh (3rd place finisher in 2004 WSOP $10K Main Event) and Evelyn Ng (One of the top tournament poker pros in the world). The competition online is solid on this site, although I seem to run into a lot more players here on bodog who are not as disciplined as other online players. You will see a lot more aggression on these sites without the benefits of cards. This will hamper your progress a bit in terms ot reading players, but will reward you and teach you the importance of patience in the poker rooms. I have heard some user complaints about the unreliability of the software, but those concerns are mild and usually the result more of bad play and unlucky beats than the software itself. Overall Rating: 4.85 out of 5 Poker Stars No other site can boast the three reigning WSOP Main Event Champions as spokespeople for their sites. With Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, and Jospeh Hachem, Poker Stars has cornered the market for big name stars to bring people to their sites. If you were to see the three reigning champions endorsing the same site, wouldn't you be inclined to join? I was, and still play the tables frequently. First thing I noticed about this site is that it is dedicated to the game of poker. There will be no sports betting here, no casino games like blackjack, this is poker at its simplest. Something I noticed about this site that other sites don't take as much advantage of is the fact that they have different pages for the rules of the game as well as some tutorials and pages to read to improve your game. These become very helpful to those new players who are looking to learn how to play. One thing that may dissuade players is the fact that they only offer bonuises during certain times and don't have bonuses that are good all the time. People who are looking for incentives will be turned away from the fact that they only have these bonuses available part of the time and usually don't advertise them on their sites. They instead send e-mails to their members. I have received some of the e-mails but I feel as though they don't come often enough. The competition on this site is some of the toughest on the internet. Without the big promotions of other sites, they seem to attract only the most serious poker players and the new and beginner players shy away because of this. You get players who play strong, aggressive, but with purpose more times than not. I find that a lot of times I play I am impressed with the players that are around the world on this site. The software is simple, no super features, following the ideals of simplicity that you can see on the main page. All in all, if you want competition without the cluttler, this is the site for you. Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Party Poker If you are looking for a site that has the combination of promotions and simplicity, then Party Poker might be the perfect site for you. They don't clutter the site or the softwre with some of the speciality games that you might find, but that is just fine if you are looking for poker to focus on. With some of the highest membership numbers on the internet today you are likely to find a competitive game no matter the time of day you log on. The stakes are standard for internet sites and you will be treated to average site rakes. The software is very simple and doesn't take a lot to figure out, making it easier to get to the games. However, there are a few features that most sites have that you might miss around the sites. Something obviously missing is the flop percentages, something that most sites keep on their sites. They allow you play upto three tables at once, which is good for those who want to get more action in. Some unique features that they have include the ability to open private tables that you can populate with people you know, making for your own "home" games without the tables or the feeding of guests. They also give you the ability to take and save notes about the players. They have good customer-service lines, and the numbers are toll-free, including in the US, a feature that some sites have yet to adopt, sadly. They are usually quick to resolve issues, however there was an instance where I had to go through multiple channels to get the answer for the concern that I had. Overall, they have a good site but it's only simplistic. More to Consider What you can do is do your own research. There are many sites out there and forums which can guide you to different sites. These are only the sites that I have personal experience on and you are encouraged to get your own infomation on these sites as well as more. Try other established sites like Full Tilt Poker or Ultimate Bet to get information on their sites. |
