Review of order poker hands::Does a Full House Beat a Flush in Texas Holdem?








Poker               has               always               been               a               popular               game               throughout               the               United               States               but               ever               since               2004               when               ESPN               broadcasted               the               World               Series               of               Poker,               it               seemed               to               have               jumped               to               incredibly               new               heights.

The               Internet               and               entrepreneurs               have               flooded               computers               with               gaming               sites               that               allow               people               to               gamble               on               line               or               just               play               for               fun.

It               is               slowly               becoming               once               again,               a               national               past               time               here               in               America.

Whenever               I               play,               there               always               seems               to               be               one               person               who               does               not               know               what               they               are               doing               and               needs               help               along               the               way.

I'm               not               a               professional               poker               player               by               any               means,               but               I               do               understand               the               hands               that               you               can               get               and               the               chances               of               getting               specific               hands.

Knowing               these               key               things,               will               help               you               play               poker               and               play               it               well.

Here               is               the               breakdown               of               the               possible               hands               in               order               of               best               to               worst.

1.

The               Royal               Flush.

The               Royal               Flush               is               considered               "The               Nuts"               in               any               hand.

"The               Nuts"               means               a               hand               that               cannot               be               beat               by               any               other               hand.

Basically               if               you               draw               a               Royal               Flush,               you               win               the               hand               unless               you               fold.

A               Royal               Flush               is               a               10               through               Ace               all               in               the               same               suit.

There               are               only               4               possible               combinations               in               a               game               of               poker               and               the               probability               of               getting               this               hand               is               less               than               two               thousandth               of               a               percent.

I               myself               have               never               received               the               hand               in               the               six               years               of               playing.
               2.

A               straight               flush.

A               straight               flush               is               only               superseded               by               the               Royal               Flush.

A               straight               flush               is               five               cards               in               a               row               all               in               the               same               suit.

An               example               would               be               a               5               through               9               all               diamonds.

There               are               forty               possible               combinations               and               the               chances               of               getting               this               hand               are               less               than               two               hundredth               of               a               percent.
               3.

Four               of               a               kind.

Just               as               it               sounds,               four               cards               that               have               the               same               rank.

There               are               624               possibly               combinations               and               the               probability               of               getting               one               these               is               less               than               .03%.
               4.

Full               house.

A               full               house               is               a               pair,               plus               three               of               a               kind.

This               is               usually               the               most               common               of               the               strong               hands               and               there               are               3,744               possible               combinations               and               the               chances               of               getting               this               hand               is               around               0.15%.
               5.

Flush.

A               flush               is               five               cards               of               the               same               suit,               regardless               of               the               order.

There               are               5,108               possible               combinations               and               the               possibility               of               getting               this               hand               is               exactly               0.2%.
               6.

Straight.

A               straight               is               a               sequence               of               five               cards               in               a               row,               regardless               of               suit.

There               are               10,200               possible               combinations               and               the               chances               of               getting               this               hand               is               less               than               0.5%.
               7.

Three               of               a               kind.

Three               cards               that               are               of               the               same               rank,               such               as               three               kings,               or               three               two.

There               are               54,912               possible               combinations               and               the               chances               of               getting               this               hand               is               a               little               more               then               2%.
               8.

Two               pair.

As               simple               as               it               sounds,               two               cards               of               the               same               rank               plus               another               two               cards               of               the               same               rank.

A               common               hand               there               are               123,552               combinations               and               you               have               about               a               5%               chance               of               getting               this               hand.
               9.

One               pair.

Two               cards               of               the               same               rank.

There               are               1,098,240               possible               combinations,               and               in               a               given               hand               you               have               a               42%               chance               of               receiving               this               hand.
               10.

No               pair.

No               cards               that               match               anything               stated               previously.

There               are               1,302,540               combinations               and               in               a               given               hand,               50%               of               the               time               you               will               get               this               hand.

    The               actual               poker               software               is               updated               once               every               few               weeks               and               they               always               bring               new               improvements               to               the               software               that               make               it               easier               to               play.
                   This               site               is               the               brainchild               of               CEO               and               founder               Calvin               Ayre,               one               of               the               more               visible               faces               in               online               poker               today.

    He               has               attracted               some               of               the               young               guns               in               the               poker               world               to               help               him               with               the               promotion               of               his               site.

                   The               competition               online               is               solid               on               this               site,               although               I               seem               to               run               into               a               lot               more               players               here               on               bodog               who               are               not               as               disciplined               as               other               online               players.

    You               will               see               a               lot               more               aggression               on               these               sites               without               the               benefits               of               cards.

    This               will               hamper               your               progress               a               bit               in               terms               ot               reading               players,               but               will               reward               you               and               teach               you               the               importance               of               patience               in               the               poker               rooms.

    I               have               heard               some               user               complaints               about               the               unreliability               of               the               software,               but               those               concerns               are               mild               and               usually               the               result               more               of               bad               play               and               unlucky               beats               than               the               software               itself.

                   No               other               site               can               boast               the               three               reigning               WSOP               Main               Event               Champions               as               spokespeople               for               their               sites.

    With               Chris               Moneymaker,               Greg               Raymer,               and               Jospeh               Hachem,               Poker               Stars               has               cornered               the               market               for               big               name               stars               to               bring               people               to               their               sites.

    If               you               were               to               see               the               three               reigning               champions               endorsing               the               same               site,               wouldn't               you               be               inclined               to               join?

    I               was,               and               still               play               the               tables               frequently.
                   First               thing               I               noticed               about               this               site               is               that               it               is               dedicated               to               the               game               of               poker.

    There               will               be               no               sports               betting               here,               no               casino               games               like               blackjack,               this               is               poker               at               its               simplest.

    Something               I               noticed               about               this               site               that               other               sites               don't               take               as               much               advantage               of               is               the               fact               that               they               have               different               pages               for               the               rules               of               the               game               as               well               as               some               tutorials               and               pages               to               read               to               improve               your               game.

    These               become               very               helpful               to               those               new               players               who               are               looking               to               learn               how               to               play.

    I               find               that               a               lot               of               times               I               play               I               am               impressed               with               the               players               that               are               around               the               world               on               this               site.

    The               software               is               simple,               no               super               features,               following               the               ideals               of               simplicity               that               you               can               see               on               the               main               page.

    All               in               all,               if               you               want               competition               without               the               cluttler,               this               is               the               site               for               you.

                   If               you               are               looking               for               a               site               that               has               the               combination               of               promotions               and               simplicity,               then               Party               Poker               might               be               the               perfect               site               for               you.

    They               don't               clutter               the               site               or               the               softwre               with               some               of               the               speciality               games               that               you               might               find,               but               that               is               just               fine               if               you               are               looking               for               poker               to               focus               on.

    With               some               of               the               highest               membership               numbers               on               the               internet               today               you               are               likely               to               find               a               competitive               game               no               matter               the               time               of               day               you               log               on.

    The               stakes               are               standard               for               internet               sites               and               you               will               be               treated               to               average               site               rakes.
                   The               software               is               very               simple               and               doesn't               take               a               lot               to               figure               out,               making               it               easier               to               get               to               the               games.

    They               are               usually               quick               to               resolve               issues,               however               there               was               an               instance               where               I               had               to               go               through               multiple               channels               to               get               the               answer               for               the               concern               that               I               had.

    Overall,               they               have               a               good               site               but               it's               only               simplistic.

    What               you               can               do               is               do               your               own               research.

    There               are               many               sites               out               there               and               forums               which               can               guide               you               to               different               sites.

    If               you               have               a               pocket               pair               of               either               sixes               or               kings               and               the               only               other               player               to               call               has               pocket               Aces,               which               pocket               pair               are               you               better               off               having               based               on               probability               percentages               of               winning?

    Most               people               would               intuitively               say               pocket               kings               are               better.

    Intuition               is               incorrect               in               this               case.

    This               is               both               a               very               hard               question               and               a               very               easy               one.

    It               is               an               easy               question               because               your               odds               are               very               poor               with               either               pair.

    It               is               a               difficult               question               because               it               is               2%               worse               if               you               have               a               pair               of               kings               than               a               pair               of               sixes               against               the               pocket               aces.
                   Before               I               go               into               the               analysis               of               this               hand               let               me               first               say               it               is               much               worse               to               have               pocket               kings               against               pocket               aces               because               you               are               much               more               likely               to               make               a               large               call               or               bet,               even               all               in               bet,               with               kings               than               sixes,               which               will               usually               be               folded               against               a               large               bet               or               raise.

    Theoretically               these               two               hands               can               fall               at               endgame               with               two               head               up               players               left.

    In               this               case               even               the               pocket               sixes               may               make               an               all               in               bet               since               any               pair               heads               up               is               generally               a               winner.
                   If               you               have               two               kings               you               must               draw               a               third               king               without               the               aces               drawing               a               third               ace               in               order               to               win.

    If               a               four               flush               is               unfolded               on               the               board               the               aces               will               beat               both               sixes               and               kings               if               the               hold               cards               of               both               players               match               the               suit               of               the               four               flush.

    If               neither               player               matches               the               4               flush               the               point               is               moot,               with               the               improbable               exception               that               a               5               flush               on               board               will               unfold               to               tie               the               game.

    Otherwise               the               single               player               matching               the               4               flush               will               win.
                   The               reason               it               is               2%               better               to               have               sixes               rather               than               kings               has               to               do               with               the               possibility               of               a               straight               draw.

    The               king               pair               limits               the               odds               of               the               aces               drawing               a               straight               since               a               king               fall               for               an               ace               high               straight               is               diminished               by               50%.

    Likewise,               the               kings               draw               for               an               open               ended               straight               is               diminished               by               25%               since               two               aces               are               already               out               of               play               for               that               hand.
                   In               real               time               play               the               odds               of               any               pocket               pair               winning               against               aces               is               small               before               the               flop,               about               1               in               5.

    The               2%               advantage               due               to               a               straight               draw               is               small               and               more               of               an               intellectual               exercise               than               a               real               time               consideration.

    You               are               more               likely               to               make               money               on               this               tidbit               of               information               as               a               side               bet               rather               than               a               difference               of               tactical               play.
