Review of poker hands nicknames::Why Is New York Referred to as the Big Apple
First of all, I have to admit I have become a basketball fan over the course of the last few years. My fiancé is an avid sports fan and, of course, this includes basketball. Needless to say, I found myself sitting next to him every few days following our hometown team, the Washington Wizards. Slowly, I found myself remembering names of the basketball players and finally, after much comparison to other players on our team, I decided Gilbert Arenas was my favorite player. I found myself in awe of how fast he moved, how quickly he converted shots, challenged other players' talent and ultimately, how he was able to provide a light at the end of the tunnel for a team that seemed to be heading nowhere fast. That's right. Gilbert Arenas helped pave the way for the Washington Wizards to head to the play-offs for the first time since 1997. And he's not through, yet. Gilbert Jay Arenas, Jr. was born on January 6, 1982 in Miami, Florida. He was raised primarily by his father due to their mother's drug abuse and eventual abandonment of the family altogether. He and his father remain close with his father showing up to his games in support of his son. Arenas joined the NBA after being drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2001. Unfortunately, he was drafted in the second round as the 31st pick. Later, Arenas notes that he cried that day because he was so disappointed at how low he was drafted into the league. His journey in becoming the player he is today started in Arizona as he won the Most Improved Player Award for 2003. Although he wasn't the explosive player we see today, he was still very talented and quick. He rapidly became the player every coach wanted on their team. After various offers and confusion as to what team he should join, he flipped a coin which decided his fate would lie in the hands of the Washington Wizards. Joining the Washington Wizards gained Arenas much recognition and attention from fans everywhere. Unfortunately, he didn't showcase his talent during his first year with the Wizards because he had a strained abdominal muscle injury. He was uable to play for the pretty much the entire season. The great thing about Arenas is that he shook off that low-point and proved to everyone that he was unstoppable the next year. During the 2004-05, the fans in the Washington, D.C. area began to see why Arenas was on their hometeam. He averaged an impressive 25 points per game. Coupled with shooting-guard Larry Hughes, Arenas blew the crowds of each game he played. It was this year he began one his trademark game closers -- the buzzer shot. He would sink buzzer beater shots. They could be three-pointers or just a quick lay-up -- the important thing was that they went in without giving anytime for the opposing team to react. Arenas was voted into the All-Star game during that season as a reserve. The 2005-06 basketball season presented Arenas in that same mind-blowing light and if possible, an even greater talent emerged from him. He averaged 31 points per game. One of the first records Arenas set during this season was for most points scored in 30 minutes. He sunk in 46 with ease. His game has been getting better and better and it doesn't matter what player is on his team. More recently, Arenas was not picked for the USA Team for the 2006 FIBA World Championship. Arenas held this grudge against the coaches and vowed to fans and haters alike that he would score 50 points against their teams (Suns and Trail Blazers). Although Arenas has created dents in both teams' records, Arenas hasn't always been able to follow through with his threats. On February 11, 2007 he only scored 9 points against the Portland Trail Blazers. Perhaps the most satisfying performance I have seen of Gilbert Arenas was when he scored 60 points against the Los Angeles Lakers...more specifically, against Kobe Bryant. This may be my biased side speaking, seeing as how I am a Wizards fan, but Arenas just had his game on that night. He came to play and he did. Bryant is a superb player -- there's no doubt about that. Arenas just has a way to make himself be more likable than I feel Bryant is. Bryant took a jab at Arenas stating all the shots he took were not "quality shots." Needless to say, Arenas began to yell that phrase out whenever he made a shot, an ode to Kobe Bryant. More recently, Gilbert Arenas has been voted into the 2007 All-Star Team as a starter for the first time. He barely edged out Vince Carter for the start. Any fan has to wonder whether Arenas' quirks really do help him in becoming a better player. He's admitted to playing poker at half-time, changing his shoes during games if he's not doing well, soaking himself in the team showers before the second half, etc. I'm sure the list can go on and on. More than anything else, Arenas is a player for the fans. At the end of every game, he throws his jersey out to the crowd, regardless of whether it is a home game or not. For the 2006-07 year, Arenas is giving $100 for every point he scores during a home game to schools in the local area. Owner Abe Pollin promised to match that for every Wizards' away game. Besides Arenas' amazing basketball skills, you'll hear about the quirkiness of his personality that has been more appropriately been named, "Gilbertology." He began yelling "Hibachi" out after every amazing shot, which meant that he was on fire and he was "cooking and chicken and shrimp" to members of the opposing team. He also refers to himself as "The Black Assassin" because he has no conscience when he's out on the court. More recognizable is his nickname, "Agent Zero," which is a reference to his jersey number. He wears the number zero because he was told he would play zero minutes with his college team at the University of Arizona. I have to say I got goosebumps when the crowd at Verizon Center began chanting MVP before he took his foul shots against the Utah Jazz (January 15, 2007). Although the season is only halfway over and that trophy isn't awarded until the end of the year, the fact that NBA fans recognize his talent is awesome. Arenas has worked so hard to get to where he is, it's only fitting he be able to end the year on that kind of a high note. There is so much more to say about Gilbert Arenas that I would suggest just watching some of the Washington Wizards games and find out for yourself why he is such a great player. The great thing about Arenas is that he just recently turned 25 and is this great this young! He still has work to do on his game and maintaining a high points per game. However, it goes without saying that Arenas is turning out to be a great asset for the Washington Wizards and an ideal member of the NBA. We need more players or his calibur and personality to make this league even greater than what it is. Agent Zero is the man! |
